Find Your Spark!

As I was writing a letter to a hard-working college student who is participating in Southwestern Advantage’s summer sales and leadership program, I was trying to put my thoughts into words in a succinct, yet inspiring way. I wrote this:

“God puts kindling in all of us. It’s up to us to light the fire within us. Find your spark! I promise you will be a light to others that will both attract them and extinguish their darkness.”

Through thoughtful conversations about life and spirituality, this young man I was writing to gets it. His spark comes to light through his words and actions, his willingness to seek growth through submission and obedience. He is figuring out life day by day, but in a way that sets him apart from many of the students I mentor and counsel. He is not problem-free, nor is he sin-free. But he has been set free. He has very few chains holding him back. The choices he makes are free from regret. And a glorious future awaits him in all aspects of his future including his career, relationships, and faith.

I wish this bright outlook was true of everyone I meet with. But the reality is, this young man is not like most young people. You may be able to relate. We are all broken messes at some time or another, but especially when we are young and think we know everything and are ready to take on the world. What we don’t realize is how formidable the world is . . . how demoralizing and disheartening it can be.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is watching a young person turn their life around. Once they were lost and now they are found! They lose the “L.”  They stop focusing on the world and start getting into the Word. Seeing the change in them and the sense of accomplishment is just about one of the most rewarding feelings I can think of. One of the ways they ignite change is to find their spark to light their internal kindling.

Our spark is something that sets us afire within. It gives us a sense of purpose and serves as a means of awakening. It provokes action for the sole purpose of achievement and accomplishment. In short, our spark is our inspiration.

Find your spark! Find what compels you to excellence! Find your cause, your fight, your encouragement! Use it to light your kindling and light the fire within you that burns like a wildfire. Shine your light, using it to overpower the darkness in your life and those around you.

Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
