The Secret to a Great Attitude

What’s the power of having a good attitude?

First, here’s a blast from my past.

When I was in college, I worked at Southwestern Advantage. For five summers I sold – and recruited students to come with me to sell – educational children’s books door to door.

Here’s the thing: It was always hard for me, even my fifth summer, and I was a top student seller.

Maybe you’re going through something in your life that’s incredibly difficult.

Maybe on any given day you’re battling challenges.

So how do you have a great attitude?

One of the things I learned back then from a top sales guy named Mark is that advanced sales is nothing more than advanced attitude plus advanced work ethic.

Advanced sales is nothing more than advanced attitude plus advanced work ethic.

And I’ve always loved that.

I’ve always believed that.

And Mark is an incredibly successful guy today.

We see that with a lot of our top sales clients now at Southwestern Consulting.

Top producers have an advanced attitude and advanced work ethic.

So what’s an advanced attitude?

First, having an advanced work ethic is part of having an advanced attitude: If you’re moving fast, you’re focused on what’s and who’s next?

You’re asking, “How can I help? How can I serve?”

You aren’t slowing down to think negative thoughts.

That’s really huge about having an advanced work ethic.

The second thing about an advanced attitude using positive self-talk and affirmations.

This is one of the things I’ve struggled with because I’m not naturally the most positive, optimistic, enthusiastic or outgoing guy.

My strategy has been that if I can occupy my mind with positive input, then I stop it from focusing on negative things.

Positive self-talk and affirmations is a great way to do that.

The third thing I really wanted to share with you, which we’ve talked about before, is putting your self-esteem into your work habits, rather than your results.

When you’re in sales, you watch how you grow over time.

When you’re a business owner, your growth needs to be steady over time.

A good analogy is the stock market on any given day.

The stock market oscillates, right?

It goes up and down and it’s all over the place, so if your attitude is connected to your results, that’s like being a day trader in the stock market.

You’re trying to predict every day, so you’re constantly up and down with these dramatic highs and lows.

Really, though, the way most of us make money in the stock market is to invest and hold on for the long term.

That’s like saying, “I’m going to have a great attitude. No matter what happens, I’m going to just be consistent with my attitude and consistent with my work ethic.”

If you do that, you might have good days and bad days in terms of your results, just like the stock market.

However, if you do this consistently, it’ll grow over time, just like the stock market.

If you’re having a tough day, don’t get too down on yourself.

Don’t focus on it.

And if you’re feeling great just because you’re having a great day, that’s also a risk because you’re going to oscillate and fluctuate.

The next day might be rough.

Be consistent in your attitude and work ethic, and regardless of what happens with your results, I predict that life will get better for you over time.
