The Right Way to Approach Big Dreams

You’ve heard people called big dreamers before.

I’m one of them – I’ve always had big dreams.

And maybe you have a personal and professional dream right now, too.

Sadly though, many of us, including me, never reach some of those big dreams, or fall far short of them.

About a decade ago, I had a realization about what worked and what didn’t work.

What was the thing that I had in common when I didn’t hit the big dream?

I was focused on how big the dream was.

I was focused on everything it would take to get there.

To use a metaphor, take the stairs (that was also the title of my first book).

When you have a big dream, it’s sort of like looking up and seeing where you want to go, but still appears very far away.

What happens is that we want to skip some steps to get there quicker.

We want to fast-forward or find a shortcut to that big dream.

But wait: You also need to focus on the big dream.

That can seem confusing, but I’m going to share with you the secret of how to approach your big dream.

First, think about your big dream at night when you fall asleep. Think about what it would be like to hit the top.

But during any given moment during the day, this is what you need to think about: your next step. Your next action.

Ask yourself: What’s the next behavior? What’s the next task? What’s the next belief I need to help me break through that next barrier? What’s the next thing I need to do?

If I start thinking about all this at once, it’s scary, daunting and overwhelming, and I think, “I don’t know if that’s really possible.”

But when I think of the next action I need to take, I realize I can get from here to here.

I know I can get from here to here.

Then, if I can get from here to here, I can get from the next here to here, and so on.

You do want to think about the big dream and what it would be like to get to the top, but on a daily basis, you need to focus on the next action step.

What’s right in front of you?

What’s the next thing you need to do or the next person you need to meet or the next thing you should learn?

I’d also like to invite you to request a free call to talk with one of our Southwestern Consulting coaches to learn more about achieving your dreams.

But the thing to remember for today and every day is to just simply focus on that next step.

Take one step at a time.

Take the stairs and we’ll see you at the top.
