How to Conquer Feeling Completely Overwhelmed

Pretend I’m lying on a couch.

It’s because we’re doing a therapy session today.

I’m going to play the role of therapist and patient.

Guess what? Sometimes I feel completely overwhelmed.

I do.

Yes, I’m an expert who helps people multiply their time, take action and be productive.

This year, though, was huge for my family and business.

My wife and I moved into a new house. We had our first baby.

Our business grew 30% and we hired more than 50 people. And with that comes lots more work – emails, meetings and new relationships, a total overflow of things.

And there’s times where I feel completely overwhelmed.

Have you ever felt like that?

We know that 84% of the people who work with us say time management and productivity is their single biggest issue – they have that feeling of constantly being behind and putting out fires.

What I want to share with you is the single greatest tip for conquering the feeling of being overwhelmed.

First, I want to share with you something that one of our Southwestern Consulting coaches, Teej Cummins, says when she’s really busy or has too much to do.

She says, “I’m experiencing elevated abundance. I’m not too busy.”

This is such an empowering way to think about it.

It’s a key insight for when we’re feeling overwhelmed, and from what the statistics show, many of us have felt and feel that way even right now.

Maybe as you’re reading this, you’re thinking about all of your unread emails. Or project deadlines. Or laundry that needs to be done. Or birthday presents that need to be mailed.

So here’s the therapy session on my couch.

When you feel overwhelmed, you have a choice about how to view it. You have a choice about your attitude toward it.

Now I’m going to share with you the wrong choice.

I’m going to tell you about my experience.

First I feel busy, and I allow myself to get overwhelmed.

When I get overwhelmed, I create a stressor.

I feel stressed, and the result of that is pressure.

Overwhelm plus stress equals pressure.

There’s so much stuff that I have to do and I feel like it’s more than I can tackle.

I’m overwhelmed. My response to that unconsciously is stress. The result is pressure.

And I feel trapped. I feel restrained. I feel restricted. I feel like I can’t breathe.

I’m anxious and I procrastinate.

A lockdown happens, and that mode doesn’t serve any of us well.

So I’m going to share a huge life-changing tip from a book.

It’s one of my favorite business books of all time.

The book is actually the Bible.

I’m going to paraphrase something from the book of John where it’s quoting Jesus.

He says, “I am the vine and you are the branches. Remain in me. If you remain in me, you will bear much fruit.

“But apart from me, you can do nothing.”

And that’s the key. The key line is remain in me and you will bear much fruit, and apart from me you will do nothing.

What’s so powerful is that I’m not the vine, or the source.

That means I’m not in control. It’s not my responsibility to do everything, to manage everything or to complete everything.

It’s not up to me. And that’s not my job. That’s not my role.

Statistically, a large percentage of us believe in God or higher being, so if you consider that your job isn’t to be the source, but to remain in the source, that empowers great things to happen.

So here’s the alternate. Instead of my normal choice, which is to feel overwhelmed, what if I choose the idea that this is abundance?

Say, “I’m experiencing elevated abundance.”

Abundance has shown up in my life and my job is to remain in God.

In other words, choose faith, and that things will work out because I’m not in control and don’t have to do it all.

I’ll just do my best, and my job is to remain connected to the vine, not to be the vine.

I’m just a branch.

My job is to connect to the vine and do the best I can.

And if I do that, the idea is that I’ll bear much fruit.

The equation is different now.

The equation is that abundance is coming to me, not through the result of my own work, but as a result of being connected to the vine and having faith.

The result is peace and that changes everything.

Instead of choosing overwhelm plus stress equals pressure, you can choose to say it’s abundance plus faith equals peace.

My job is to just remain connected to the source and not be in total control.

It’s not all up to you. It’s not just about you.

Of course, you should do everything in your power within reason.

You should take action. You should be disciplined.

However, your job really is to remain connected to the source, and if you do that, you’re going to experience a flow of abundance.

This abundance may be more than you can keep up with, so you’ll have to choose faith.

When you do that, you’ll have peace. You’ll have power and you’ll gain freedom. And the results will show up.

This is a choice we make, but it’s hard.

It’s important every once in a while to “come back to the couch” and have a visit with someone who can remind us that we’re not too busy.

I’m experiencing elevated abundance.

I have a chance to choose and respond with faith. The result of that will be peace and power, along with freedom and results.

We hope you’ll stay connected to us and that as long as we stay connected to the vine, hopefully we can keep you encouraged and empowered.

Today, remember that you’re not too busy.

You’re experiencing elevated abundance.

Choose faith and your result will be peace.

Boy did I need to hear this today! I was overwhelmed to the point of walking in circles accomplishing nothing but increased frustration and stress.

Thank you for the reminder….my job is to stay connected to the vine. The vine will give me all that I will need to bear much fruit!

    Happy Monday Rory….

I can’t tell you how much this spoke to my heart as a Christian dentist(sole practitioner), business owner, wife and mom. These are thoughts that I have dealt with incorrectly for a long time now, and just needed the correct way to think about this and process it in my brain!! Touched my heart deeply and the application of scripture is the reason this will work. Remain in the vine. Always. I’m experiencing elevated abundance. I am not too busy.
    Thank You:)
