An Unrecognized Truth About Making Money

I want to talk to you about money.

Sometimes that’s a taboo subject.

People assume if you talk about money, then that’s all that matters to you.

I don’t believe that at all.

Money is an important part of life – and there’s a truth about it that too many people misunderstand.

I want to clear that up today.

I’m here in Milwaukee, and it’s an absolutely tropical day – we’ve got a wind chill of about 20 degrees below zero.

And I’m about to go out and talk to several hundred people.

I’m going to be paid a ridiculous amount of money to stand on stage and talk for 75 minutes.

The reason I’m telling you this is because it illustrates something that’s very important for your life.

I bet if the people in the audience knew what I was getting paid, they’d say, “Wow, that’s unbelievable. I can’t believe how much this guy is paid to talk to us for an hour.”

OK, but what they wouldn’t see is that I arrived here last night at midnight and got up at 5:30 am this morning.

They wouldn’t see the travel delays at the airport. Or the packing or the rushing the week before.

They wouldn’t see that I had to leave my nine-month-old son (and yeah, I’m not sleeping at home).

They wouldn’t see my journey as an entrepreneur. They wouldn’t see the thousands of hours of reading and researching and speaking I’ve done.

We started Southwestern Consulting, and now we’re 150 people strong.

For the first four years of this business, though, we lived in a new city every three months making cold calls out of the phonebook. People didn’t see that.

They didn’t see the 304 free presentations I made before making it to the World Championship of Public Speaking and losing.

They didn’t see when I was in college, working in a program called Southwestern Advantage – that’s one of our sister companies.

I went door to door selling for five years. Basically I made hundreds of presentations that I wasn’t paid for when people didn’t buy.

I didn’t get paid for all the doors slammed in my face.

You don’t get paid for your failures, right?

The undeniable fact about money is you don’t get paid for what you do today.

You’re getting paid for your past discipline, sacrifices and work.

The problem is that people say, “How do I make more money today?”

They just missed the whole point.

Money comes from the work you did yesterday, and the weeks, months and years before that.

If you made a sale today, it’s not really because of what you did today.

The reality is you’re being paid for all the time, energy, frustration, struggle, sacrifice and failure you’ve already experienced.

I’m going downstairs in a few minutes, and will have a chance to serve and love on these people, hopefully giving them an experience they enjoy and insights they can use.

So why does this matter to you?

Here’s why: Today, focus on your work. Focus on how you’re disciplined today and what you’re sacrificing right now.

Eventually you’ll get paid for today’s hard work.

Today, are you doing the work? Are you getting the education? Are you making the sacrifices?

It’s not an unfair system. It’s actually very fair.

But this is why so few people make tons of money. They don’t put in the work.

The people working the hardest for the longest period of time – and doing all the things they don’t want to do, taking risks – end up making the most money.

The point is that if you want to be paid tomorrow, you have to be willing to do the work today.

It’s hard, which is one of the reasons why our team at Southwestern Consulting believes in one- on-one coaching to help hold you accountable or encourage you.

Request a free call with one of our coaches today and they’ll talk to you and see if coaching is a fit.

Remember, you’ll always get paid for how hard you work.
